Read Write Inc
We use the highly successful Read Write Inc. Phonics programme to teach our children to read, write and spell. Ruth Miskin Training recognise us for teaching the Read Write Inc. programmes with fidelity and passion – we know what it takes to make literacy pleasurable and rewarding for our children.
RWI at Lavender Field School:
All pupils that start at Lavender Field have different starting points in relation to phonics. The teaching of RWI at Lavender Field is highly personalised so that all of our pupils make a strong start no matter their age/needs or ability. RWI was developed by Ruth Miskin and more information on this can be found at https://ruthmiskin.com/en/find-out-more/parents/.
Delivery of Phonics:

Set 1 Sounds are taught in the following order together with rhymes to help children form the letters correctly and instantly recognise sounds ready for blending.
Set 2 & 3 Sounds:
The children are then taught Set 2 Sounds - the long vowels. When they are very confident with all of set 1 and 2 they are taught Set 3 Sounds.
• Sounds taught should be ‘pure’ e.g ‘b’, not ‘buh’ as this is central to phonic teaching and the ability to recognise sounds in words.
• Blends are to be de-clustered. e.g. bl is two specific sounds.
• Set 2 sounds are to be taught after Set 1 (initial sounds)
• Letter names are to be introduced with Set 3.
Developing a Love of Reading:
Stories, poems, rhymes and non-fiction are chosen for reading to develop pupils’ vocabulary, language comprehension and love of reading. Pupils are familiar with and enjoy listening to a wide range of stories, poems, rhymes and non-fiction during whole class story time sessions, regular reading time with an adult, visits to the local library and across all subject areas. All classrooms have an appealing Reading Area to encourage pupils to develop an interest in a variety of texts. We celebrate special events linked to reading such as; World Book Day and National Share a Story Month. We make regular trips to the local Library so that pupils can select books of personal interest to them and also engage in workshops. We have introduced ‘Reading Buddies’ within school; providing opportunities for pupils to read to one another, again helping develop a love of reading and also supporting pupils to feel confident and proud of their abilities. We also invite guest authors/illustrators into school to conduct differentiated workshops with our pupils.
